Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Amman

Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer is included. Arrive in Amman at any time, there are no planned activities. Meet your National Geographic Expedition Leader this evening for a welcome meeting to learn more about the tour and plans for the following day, choose to head out for an optional dinner at a local restaurant with your Expedition Leader and the group.

Amman is a very big city and there is not one central area to stay - hotels are spread out across various neighbourhoods within the city, often on busy streets without pedestrian walkways - getting around the city, for visitors and locals, is done by car. For this reason, to move around the city in your free time, you will have to take a taxi, please feel free to ask your Expedition Leader for recommendations and assistance.

  • Day 2

    Amman

Awake in the Jordanian capital and venture to Jerash, home to one of the world’s largest and most well-preserved Roman ruins. Wander amid the colonnaded streets, soaring temples, and spacious squares of this ancient city; then visit a the tour operator–supported café run by local women, where we’ll enjoy a cooking class and delicious traditional lunch. Back in Amman, visit the Jordan Archaeological Museum and explore the ruins of the Citadel—one of the oldest continually inhabited places in the world.

  • Day 3

    Amman/Wadi Musá

Depart early towards Petra, driving along the scenic King’s Highway. Stop at Mount Nebo, where Moses was offered a glimpse of the Promised Land according to the Hebrew Bible. Take in stunning views of the Dead Sea from the summit, and continue to Madaba, famed for its Byzantine mosaics—including the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land. Arrive in Wadi Musa, our base for exploring Petra, and enjoy a talk by an archaeologist about the legendary sandstone city and the ongoing excavations taking place there.

  • Day 4

    Wadi Musá

Rise early to discover the legendary city of Petra, carved out of sandstone cliffs by the Nabataean Arabs as early as the second century BC. Venture into the city by way of a gorge called the Siq, and enjoy a guided walking tour of the magnificent rose-red ruins. Spend some time exploring on your own before returning to our hotel. This evening, opt to experience Petra by night, when the site glows in the light of thousands of candles, and take in a performance of Bedouin music. The site is large so please be prepared for a lot of walking over sand and rocks for the entire day. Pace yourself, stay hydrated and be sure to have proper walking/hiking shoes.

  • Day 5

    Petra/Wadi Rum

After breakfast, continue to Wadi Rum—a vast landscape of sweeping red sand dunes and towering sandstone arches. Enjoy lunch at our desert camp, then set out on a thrilling 4x4 excursion into the desert. Drive past spectacular rock formations, look for ancient petroglyphs, and pick the perfect spot to watch the sunset. Return to camp for a typical Bedouin feast. Later, head out with your Bedouin guide for a nighttime walk, admiring the dazzling, starry skies of the desert. After breakfast, drive to Wadi Rum, a vast, silent landscape of ancient riverbeds and the largest and most magnificent of Jordan's desert landscapes. Spend the night in a simple, but comfortable desert camp; The authentic goat-wool tent provides a glimpse into traditional Bedouin living. Each tent has ensuite and is outfitted with sheets, pillows, a raised bed, towels, electricity and thick covers against the desert cold. While the accommodation is simple, it is quite comfortable and offers a truly unique experience.

  • Day 6

    Wadi Rum/Dead Sea

Travel towards the Dead Sea, one of the saltiest bodies of water on the planet. Stop for lunch at a the tour operator–supported community café, located on lush green farmland surrounded by desert. Continue to the shores of the Dead Sea and settle into our hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing poolside, or choose to take a dip in the mineral-rich waters of the lake, long known for their therapeutic properties. At 423m (1,388 ft) below sea level, the shores of the Dead Sea are at the lowest land elevation on Earth. The sea is named because its salinity is so high (up to nine times that of the world’s oceans) that only a few microorganisms can live in its waters.

The Dead Sea is a resort area, with chain hotels whose sole purpose are to allow access to the Dead Sea. This allows time to relax, float in the sea or opt to visit a spa. Dinner is in the hotel, as there are no local restaurants within the resort area.

  • Day 7

    Dead Sea/Amman

Enjoy a visit to the archaeological remains of Bethany, where Jesus is believed to have been baptized. Explore the churches, chapels, monasteries, and caves of this fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site, then travel back to Amman. Join the group for an optional farewell dinner tonight.

  • Day 8

    Amman

Depart at any time. Check-out time from the hotel is normally mid-morning, but luggage storage facilities are available. We also encourage you to book a few additional nights if you want more time to explore the city.

  • I would recommend G Adventures and I hope to join you again for another tour. G Adventures decided to stop activities on September 28th due to civil unrest in the area. Our tour ended on the 29th. At first I thought the decision was a bit premature but as things turned out G Adventures timed it just right, 2 days later the air space was closed over Jordan. Thank you for taking good care of us and ensuring our safety. Things went well and I enjoyed the experience

  • Tour was great and even though it was cut short I appreciated the concern for our safety given the regional issues.

  • What is the physical rating for this tour?

This tour has a physical rating of 3, meaning it requires an average level of fitness and mobility. Travelers should be able to walk without assistance, climb 3-4 flights of stairs, step on and off small boats, and carry their own luggage at a minimum. For example, exploring Petra involves a lot of walking over sand and rocks for an entire day.
  • What transportation methods are used during the tour?

During the trip, you will travel by air-conditioned private minivan for most journeys. A thrilling 4x4 excursion is used for travel to Wadi Rum and the desert camp. Walking is also a significant mode of transport during site explorations.
  • Are there any optional activities available?

Yes, optional activities include Petra by Night (17-30 JOD per person), a Turkish Bath (30-45 JOD per person) in Petra, and Dar ne'meh - Weibdeh Optional Visit & Dinner in Amman.
  • What is the minimum age to join this trip?

Travelers must be 18 years old to travel unaccompanied. For minors traveling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.
  • Is travel insurance required for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. You must be covered for medical expenses, including emergency evacuation and repatriation (minimum USD200,000 coverage). It's strongly recommended that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage and personal effects. Evidence of insurance is required by your leader.
  • What is the local currency and how should I handle money?

The local currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar (JOD). ATMs are available in main cities and generally accept Visa and Mastercard. It's advisable to carry both. Cash is recommended for situations where ATMs are not accessible, and Euros, British Pounds, and US Dollars are easy to exchange. Bring some cash for emergencies, but rely on ATM cards and some cash as the ideal mix. US Dollar notes should be new and in good condition (newer than 1996, no tears or blemishes).
  • What are the visa and entry requirements for Jordan?

All countries require a valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity. Jordan visas can be obtained on arrival at land and airport borders for most nationalities for a fee of 40 JOD. It is your responsibility to check current requirements for your specific passport. If departing Jordan by land, a 10 JOD departure tax is required, payable in cash.
  • How much emergency money should I bring?

It is recommended to have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an 'emergency' fund, for unforeseen circumstances that might require a change to the planned route. This is a rare occurrence.
  • What is the tipping policy?

Tipping is customary in the Middle East. For ease, your Expedition Leader will collect a 'tipping kitty' at the start of the tour, approximately $64.00 USD per person (excluding the Expedition Leader's tip), to cover tips for group services like restaurant staff, hotel staff, and drivers. Personal tipping for an outstanding Expedition Leader is also appreciated, with $11-13 USD per person per day suggested as a guideline.
  • How should I dress to respect local customs?

When visiting mosques and other religious monuments, modest dress is required, meaning shoulders should be covered, and short shorts or skirts should be avoided. In general, outside of major cities, local dress is more conservative, and it's recommended that both men and women wear loose-fitting clothes with shoulders covered out of respect.
  • What health considerations should I be aware of?

It is advisable to drink bottled water in Jordan. Consult your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information and inoculations well before departure. Protection against typhoid, tetanus, infectious hepatitis, and polio is generally recommended. Carrying a first aid kit, hand sanitizers, and personal medical requirements is suggested. Note that leaders are prohibited from administering drugs.
  • Can solo travelers get their own room?

Group trips are designed for shared accommodation without a single supplement; solo travelers are paired with someone of the same sex. If you book the 'My Own Room' option, you will receive your own single room for all night stops.
  • Who will be leading the group?

This National Geographic Journeys trip is accompanied by a National Geographic Expedition Leader throughout, as well as local guides at specific sites. The Expedition Leader's role is to enhance your travel experience, provide information, suggest activities, and introduce you to local culture.
  • Can I do laundry during the trip?

Laundry facilities are offered by some of the hotels for a charge. It is advisable to bring non-polluting/biodegradable soap if you plan to do your own laundry at times.
  • What are the general safety considerations for this trip?

In major cities, use common sense, be aware of your surroundings, and mind your personal belongings, similar to anywhere in the world. Using a neck wallet or money belt for valuables is strongly recommended. Many hotels offer safety deposit boxes. When traveling in a group, your leader can amend the itinerary for safety concerns. During free time, exercise good judgment for optional activities and consider traveling in small groups or taking taxis at night.
  • What is Planeterra and how does the tour support local communities?
